Zidovsky Hrbitov
Zidovsky Hrbitov
Příbram, Czech Republic, 2003

Zidovsky Hrbitov is located in the smaller city of Pribram, Czech Republic and literally translates to “Jewish Cemetery”. This setting is steeped in perfect stillness and stands as a potent but quiet memorial to the now-deceased Jewish people of the Czech Republic.
As most of you are aware, I was born in Prague and spent the formative years of my childhood there before moving to Canada with my family. After the fall of Communism in the 1990s, I was finally able to return to my home country and to see it with fresh, ever-appreciative eyes. I spent many days on my bicycle in the late 1990s and early 2000s cycling to historic churches, castles, fortifications, narrow streets, and cemeteries that were dotted throughout the countryside.
My painting of Zidovsky Hrbitov is characterized by its distinct European flavour and is also noteworthy because it is my only mixed media piece (it features collage in addition to my regular acrylic paint). _____________________________________________________________________________________
